Over the past several years, women of various races and ethnicities have been a driving force and made quite the come-up in politics. Some of the more familiar names are Stacey Abrahms, Condoleezza Rice, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Liz Cheney, Maxine Waters, Elizabeth Warren to name a few.

Women are now seen in the light of political activism, including gubernatorial, mayoral, senator, congressional and AG positions in both, the local and federal arenas. They are active participants making changes and advocating for their communities and their country. This isn’t surprising, being females are caring and nurturing beings by nature.

When women are not holding a political office position, they’re the female counterpart that is the backbone and support system for the men in office, like First Ladies Barbara Bush, Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, Laura Bush, Eleanor Roosevelt, to name a few of many. In 1916, the first female to be elected to a U.S. national office was Jeannette Rankin of Montana, to the House of Representatives. Since her tenor as a Representative, 395 women, and counting, have held an elected position as U.S. Representatives, Delegates and Senators according to CAWP (Center for American Women and Politics); Hundreds more are in non-elected political roles.

These trailblazers have taken the political arena by storm. They have proven to be astute leaders in their own right. More and more women are making their mark in politics, and I believe this trend will continue for years to come. Women didn’t just become great today. They’ve been one to reckon with for decades since before the women's suffrage era. These women have broken the gender barrier for today and many generations forward as they grab the baton and finish the race. Women are not the first... Just the first to be recognized. Stay tuned, because women aren’t done moving and shaking up the political world.
